A leading consumer advocacy group has petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to issue an Ortho Evra recall, citing the increased risk of side effects that women may face by using the birth control patch. Government officials in Taiwan have called for a ban on the Ortho Evra patch after the island nation suffered what may be its first victim. Authorities say that a woman, who was identified by the surname Li, was hospitalized in January after suffering a stroke from which she has not yet regained consciousness.

A California woman who suffered a pulmonary embolism after using the Ortho Evra patch says that she wants other women to know about the increased risk of side effects they may face from using the patch. Ronda Sloan has joined a class action Ortho Evra lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer of the patch, alleging that the health problems she suffered were the result of using it.

Ortho Evra attorneys representing a group of women who have filed lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson, the makers of the birth control patch, say that the company misled consumers and health officials about its safety. More than 2,400 women have filed Ortho Evra lawsuits alleging they were injured after using the birth control patch.

The leading Canadian health agency has warned of dozens of reports of women who experienced Ortho Evra side effects after using the birth control patch. In the January issue of the Canadian Adverse Reactions Newsletter published by Health Canada, the agency says that at least 93 women have suffered blood clots, heart attack or other Ortho Evra side effects, including at least two deaths, since the patch went on the market.
